Powerline

Powerline

Powerline

Power Line was formed back in year 1993.  They were mainly active at playing club levels & private events.  With their blend of jazz, rock & fusion style the band progressed further & established themselves to be the top at Labuan during the next few years.

The Power Line are:

  • K. Ibrahim     –    Vocals & Keyboards
  • David Shim   –    Vocals & Guitar
  • Simon Lau     –   Bass
  • Peter Lau       –   Drums / Percussions
  • Clarence Lau  –   Drums

The band parted ways in year 1997 & every member moved on.  However, last June 2017, a proposal by a good friend & senior musician was made for the band to play for a Labuan re-union party in September.  Coincidently, this would also be the band’s unofficial 21 years re-union since 1997.  During the band rehearsal, everybody was having so much fun & enjoyed themselves pretty well. The magic was still there after all these years.  An idea struck Simon Lau to arrange for an official gig at a local club in Labuan to celebrate their 21 years re-union. They had the re-union party in November 2017. It was explosive & they had a ball. With this re-union the band have added in a new member. Clarence Lau (Peter Lau’s son) will be joining as a second drummer.  It will give more energy to the band to have a new & young talent onboard.

One good thing leads to another, Peter suggested that the band should perform at the KK Jazz Festival. Well, the band sent in their video recordings for the audition & were successfully invited to perform this March 2018.  Currently, future projects are lining up for the band.

Sybil Thomas was born to sing, to a line of music royalty that is unmatched. As the daughter of the legendary Rufus Thomas, the Stax Records recording artist, who was a famous disc jockey from the WDIA radio in Memphis Tennessee, known for “The Memphis Sound”, and the sister of Carla Thomas; she has been singing since the age of five, and is bound for greatness. Her first big break came in the early 70’s when she toured Italy with the distinguished group, The Platters, as the only female singer.

In her career, she has worked with other such music artists as Jeffrey Osborne, Luther Vandross, Phyllis Hyman, and George Duke. She has also collaborated with international legends such as jazz trombonist Hiroshi Fukumura, singing the lead vocals on the song entitled, “The Only One For Me” featured on the Hot Shot album; and Teramasu Hino, the renowned jazz saxophonist. She has toured with remarkable artists such as Lou Rawls and The Pointer Sisters. She has toured internationally with many Grammy award-winning artists, such as Roberta Flack, Peabo Bryson, and Stevie Wonder. Sybil’s voice and passion for music have brought down the house in several New York nightclubs, such as the Apollo Theatre, 7th Avenue South, and Green Street Bar and Café in the Village, as she worked the circuit in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Her international hit record, “Rescue Me” and the voice of Raw Silk’s “Do It to the Music”, from West End Records, has stood the test of time and is still on the request list all over Europe. Sybil has also made several special television appearances on the hit comedy show “Saturday Night Live”. She would be seen singing backup for several Eddie Murphy skits, Joe Cocker, and comedian Lily Tomlin.

Now currently based in Asia, Sybil is always looking for the next opportunity, the next chance to take her musical journey to the next level. She is intent on living her life like the adventure it has been so far, with a pack of friends and an R&B soul just waiting to burst forward.
